WHAT ACTUALLY IS FONIO?
Fonio is an ancient grain that has thrived in West Africa for thousands of years, particularly in countries such as Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the grain itself is drought-resistant and can thrive in poor soils.
WHY WAS THIS FONIO BEER MADE?
The new beer was brewed in collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery as part of Brooklyn Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver’s, Brewing for Impact campaign. It’s an international collaboration that brings breweries together to showcase the power of fonio. The global initiative is deeply rooted in Garrett Oliver’s belief in beer’s power to unite people, cultures and traditions. We’re delighted to be a part of this campaign.
HOW DID CARLSBERG MAKE THE REVOLUTIONARY FONIO BEER?
This innovative beer replaces all barley with drought-resistant fonio grain. The brilliant team of scientists in the Carlsberg Research Lab had to work hard with Brooklyn Brewery to unlock the recipe, testing a combination of enzymes to covert the grain’s starch into fermentable sugars. Through a bit of trial, error and constant curiosity, we found the perfect combination of those enzymes and we’re delighted to have created such a unique brew.
THE BOTTLE DESIGN
The striking Carlsberg Fonio bottle art was created by Kevin Bongang, a commercial muralist, designer and painter who was born in Cameroon, West Africa. The art encapsulates his vibrant signature style, awash in bold fun colours, swirling lines and whimsical imagery.
