Wheat Beer
Wheat beer
Unsurprisingly, wheat beers are brewed using a generous amount of wheat in the recipe. There are two main types within the wheat beer family. The German version – Weissbier – is perhaps the most widespread of the two. Super thirst-quenching with a very recognisable whiff of fruit.
Belgium is the home of another famous wheat beer style. The biére blanche or witbier is an amazing, summery drink with recipes containing both spices and fruit.
Flavour and aroma
Most wheat beers are low in bitterness and light in colour. And If you find that there is also a whiff of banana in your beer it’s likely a German style Weissbier. The main trait of the Weissbier style is an exotic fruity smell, a result of the beer’s warm top fermentation.
If your wheat beer is complex with spicy, fruity aromas from orange and coriander you’re probably holding a Belgian style wheat beer. Slightly more complex but with a sky-high drinkability like all wheat beers.
Food pairing – wheat beer and blue shells
Wheat beers are a perfect match for a light summery meal. Salads, omelettes, and other egg dishes, white fish, and shellfish. If you’re looking for a delicious classic match, the Belgians often serve steamed blue shell mussels with a nicely chilled witbier. Summary: bliss on a plate.
