Light Lager

Light lager

Light lager is by far the most popular, and most brewed beer category in the world. The home of the light lager is Germany and the Czech Republic – the Plzen region in particular. From here the light lager brewing style spread like wildfire from the 1800s and onwards. Today, wherever you travel, chances are that the local brew is a light lager.

Flavour and aroma

Light lagers are immensely thirst-quenching beers, with a little bitter bite at the end. That said, there are many subcategories of the light lager style, with the pilsner being the most important one. The pilsner malts contribute with flavours we describe as white bread, and light lagers often have a small whiff of hop aroma resembling freshly cut grass, flowers, or citrus. Refreshment is key in both light lagers and pilsners, so expect a crisp, uncomplicated brew that will always taste like … more.

Food pairing – a pilsner for poultry

Being a superbly refreshing drink, any light lager will go well with lawn moving, sunshine, and live music. But if you’re looking for a food match, light meats like poultry, pork, and veal are good choices. Bread based dishes are also a pilsner’s best friend. There is a reason why pizza, and a cold pilsner is the treat Danes offer friends who help them move house.
