Desserts paired with beer

When choosing a suitable drink to have with dessert beer is all too often overlooked. But that is about to change. We have gathered the top tips to successfully pair your favourite pudding with beer.

The crucial starting point, when matching beer and food, is getting the flavour balance right. A rich dessert favours an equally rich beer, whereas lighter desserts with fresh fruits go well with blonde beers with a certain sweetness, and fruity aroma.

Dark beer with caramel and chocolate desserts

Hearty desserts with chocolate, caramel, and ice cream pair well with strong, hearty beers with intense flavours and pronounced sweetness. Try pairing the classical Tarte tatin, with its cooked apple and caramel flavours, with an intense, dark Belgian double. The Belgian double is low in bitterness and the sweet caramelised and spicy notes makes the Tarte tatin go: “ooh la la!”
If it’s more a chocolate kind of day, then try pairing your chocolate brownie with a strong, sweet porter. The porter is packed with roasty coffee- and cocoa aromas making this combo an instant, and surprising, crowd pleaser.

Blonde beers with fruit and berries

Summery desserts with fresh fruits and berries pair well with Belgian blondes and triples. These beers are both fruity and spicy making them perfect for classic apple pies, strawberries served with cream, or even fruit sorbets.

Making the leap and serving beer with your favourite dessert may seem daunting, but there is a lot of fun to be had. And when you get it right, dessert served with beer is a match made in heaven.
