The elephants have a very special history at Carlsberg. Carl Jacobsen, one of Carlsberg’s founders, wanted to link the elephant's traditional symbolic values - strength and loyalty - to his brewery. In 1901 he had the Elephant Gate built next to his brewery in Copenhagen. Later the elephant beer was born and a drawing of the gate was added to the label.
